The Railway Ministry on Thursday issued a notification regarding increase in train ticket fares. From today, traveling in trains will become a little expensive. There has been no increase in fares for second class ordinary trains up to 215 km. Under this increased fare, for journeys of more than 215 kilometres, the fare in ordinary class has been increased by 1 paise per kilometer and in non-AC classes of mail/express trains and AC classes of all trains, there has been an increase of 2 paise per kilometre.
On December 21 itself, the Ministry had announced the decision to increase passenger fares from December 26. This is the second time within a year that the Railways has revised the fares of passenger trains. Earlier, the fare increase was implemented in July. Justifying its decision, the ministry said the objective of rationalizing fares is to strike a balance between affordable fares for passengers and cost of operation.
Know how much fare increased in which category?
Railways has clarified that there has been no increase in the fare of second class ordinary trains up to 215 km. Fares from 216 to 2,250 km have been increased by Rs 5 to Rs 20. The fare has been increased by 1 paise per kilometer in sleeper class and by 2 paise per kilometer in AC class.
The same increase will be applicable class wise in other special trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Antyodaya, Gatimaan, Yuva Express, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail. There has been no change in reservation fee, superfast charge etc. GST will also remain applicable as before.

No impact on suburban trains
Indian Railways has made changes in the fares of trains, which is coming into effect from 26th December i.e. Friday. However, there is no change on single tickets of suburban trains. There is no change in all types of season tickets suburban and non-suburban.
Railways has also clarified that the revised fare will be applicable only on tickets booked on or after December 26, 2025. No additional charges will be levied on tickets booked before this date. Also, the fare list displayed at the stations will also be updated as per the new rates effective from December 26.
