Politics has once again intensified regarding the denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the case related to Delhi riots. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has put Congress directly in the dock on this issue.
Owaisi says that the strict UAPA law was brought during the Congress government, due to which today the workers have to stay in jail for years.
Where are the roots of UAPA?
Addressing a public meeting in Amravati, Owaisi said that the law under which Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were arrested was made during the Congress regime. The Home Minister at that time was P. Chidambaram and he was the only MP to oppose this law in Parliament. The definition of UAPA is so broad that even dissent has been included in the category of terrorism.
Owaisi told why bail became impossible?
Referring to the recent decision of the Supreme Court, Owaisi said that Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were not granted bail on the basis of Section 15A in the alleged conspiracy case of Delhi riots. In the same case, some other accused were given relief on the basis of their level of participation. Both the activists have been in jail for more than five years, while the case has not yet reached the final stage.

- This law is being used against Muslims, Dalits, tribals and intellectuals who oppose the policies of the government.
- The death in jail of 85-year-old Stan Swamy, accused in the Elgar Parishad case, is an example of the harshness of this law.
- Both Congress and BJP have played an important role in strengthening this UAPA law from time to time.
Also targeted at amendment in 2019
Owaisi said that Congress supported the BJP government at the time of amendment in UAPA in the year 2019. Today the same amendment is destroying the lives of common people. When the opposition talks about secularism, it actually does so only for electoral gains.
