The holy festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. This day is considered very special for the worship of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. This year Mahashivratri will be celebrated on 15 February 2026. According to religious beliefs, the divine union of Shiva and Parvati is remembered on this date. On this day, Lord Shiva appeared for the first time in the form of Shivalinga. This is the reason why there is a tradition of doing special anointment of Shivalinga on Mahashivratri.
