Who names storms?
An organization called WMO-ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) was formed to monitor cyclones in the Indian Ocean. This decides how the names of the storms will be decided and who will keep them. The team that named the storms in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea included the first 8 countries, which included India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In the year 2018, another meeting of WMO-ESCAP was held and in the meantime, the names of five new countries were also included in the list of named countries. That means now a total of 13 countries together name storms. These include India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, Yemen, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar and Oman. Each of these countries suggests 13 names, which are easy to pronounce and not controversial in any way.

Why are storms named?
The purpose behind naming storms is to provide as much information as possible about them to the people. The names of storms are very simple and they are in different languages. The name of the cyclonic storm that hits the coast of Andhra Pradesh today, Montha, is a Thai word. In Thai language, Montha means ‘a flower full of fragrance’.
