Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Angmo has decided to amend her petition. After which the Supreme Court has now fixed October 29 for hearing the petition. In the petition, Geetanjali Angmo has challenged the central government’s decision to keep Sonam Wangchuk in custody under the National Security Act (NSA). The bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria observed that in the affidavit filed by the jailer of Jodhpur jail, it has been stated that Sonam Wangchuk’s elder brother and lawyer have met her.

Wife’s demand to share written note with Sonam Wangchuk

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Geetanjali Angmo, said that they want to amend their petition. During the hearing, Kapil Sibal demanded that Sonam Wangchuk should be allowed to exchange some written lines with his wife. On this, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that he has no problem with this.

Four people died in Ladakh violence

Earlier on October 6, the apex court had issued a notice to the Central Government and the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh, but did not issue any order related to the petition. Wangchuk was detained under the NSA law on September 26 following the violence in Ladakh. There was violence demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, in which four people were killed and 90 were injured. The NSA empowers the Center and states to detain individuals for acts against the security of India. The maximum period of detention is 12 months, although it can be canceled earlier. Wangchuk is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.
