After the 8.7 magnitude earthquake, a tsunami occurred in the coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s large northern island Hokkaido. In Honolulu, tsunami warning sirens started ringing on Tuesday and people were asked to go to high places. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the first tsunami wave of about 30 cm high reached Nemuro on the east coast of Hokkaido. According to local governor Balri Limaranco, the first tsunami wave came into the coastal region of Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement of the Kuril Islands in Russia in the Pacific Ocean. People living nearby are safe. They will remain in high places till the threat of the wave again.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that in some coastal areas of Hawaii, Chile, Japan and Solomon Islands, 1 to 3 meters high waves from tide levels may arise. In some coastal areas of Russia and Ecuador, more than 3 meters higher waves may arise. Russia’s TASS news agency reported from Petropavalovsk-Kampachkski, the largest city near the center of the earthquake, that people have come out on the streets. Many are visible on the streets without shoes or clothes. The shelves fell inside the houses, the glass broke, the cars were damaged on the road and were seen trembling in buildings. Tas also reported that there was a power failure in the capital of Kamchatka area and a stalled mobile phone service. A local Russian officer was quoted as saying that the residents of Sakhalin Island are being evacuated and emergency services are working with full capacity.

Alaska -based National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for parts of the Alaska Alusian Islands. An alert has also been issued for parts of the west coast including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. This warning also includes a large part of the coastline of Alaska, including parts of the panhandal.

Earlier in July, there were five powerful earthquakes in the sea near Kamchatka- the largest earthquake was 7.4 magnitude. The largest earthquake was at a depth of 20 km and Petropavalovsk-Kamachkski, with a population of 180,000, was 144 km east of the city. On November 4, 1952, there was a huge damage due to the 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka. It was a matter of honor that no one was reported to have been killed despite the waves of 9.1 meters (30 feet) high in Hawaii.
