The West Bengal government has raised objection to the list of central observers released by the Election Commission and has demanded changes in it. The state government has written a letter to the commission proposing to change the names of 9 out of 15 IAS officers, including the state home secretary.
Officers are posted in important responsibilities
According to senior officials, this proposal has been sent keeping in mind the administrative and official needs. The government says that the officers whose names have been suggested are working on important responsibilities in the state, hence their absence from election duty can affect the administrative system.
Election Commission will take the final decision
Responding to the state government’s letter, an Election Commission official said the proposal was being reviewed and the final decision would be taken by the commission. Earlier, the Commission had released the list of 25 senior officers from West Bengal who are to be made central observers for the assembly elections of five states West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
- This list includes 15 IAS and 10 IPS officers.
- These also include the names of police commissioners of Howrah and Asansol.
- The Commission had also clarified that it had sought names from the state government several times.
- But due to lack of timely response, the list had to be prepared and released on its own.
Instructions for Mandatory Briefing Sessions
Along with releasing the list, the Commission has also given instructions for mandatory briefing sessions for all the selected officers, so that the election process can be conducted in a fair and smooth manner. This development is being considered important from the point of view of election preparations, because with this the role of coordination between the central and state governments has once again come into discussion.
