Amid talks of major changes in voter lists, SIR dispute and alleged reverse migration along the India-Bangladesh border, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose on Monday visited the Hakimpur border area in North 24 Parganas district. This inspection of the Governor is considered very important amid increasing political tension and reports of abnormal voter increase in the districts. He directly assessed the border situation and collected detailed information from the officials.
During his visit, Governor Bose held meetings with the local administration, BSF, intelligence agencies and other officials deployed in border security. He took information from the officials on the border situation, movement of people, security challenges and changes being seen in recent weeks. The Governor said that it is important to find out the ground truth of all the news that is coming out after the SIR. For this purpose, he himself is doing a “reality check” of the border areas.
Debate increased on SIR
After the SIR (Special Voter Revision), the political debate had intensified due to the large number of deletions of names and changes in the voter list in the border districts. Several political parties and local organizations alleged that Bangladeshi illegal immigrants were returning across the border themselves to avoid document verification. These allegations have made the situation more sensitive. Many parties claim that the sudden changes in everyday movement around the border are a sign of reverse migration.

Officials’ report and Governor’s stance
During the visit, some officials told the Governor that some changes have been seen in the behavior at the border, but it is too early to call it reverse migration. Officials said that after checking the voter list and strictness of documents, some people are seen moving away from the border. However, the Governor refused to comment directly on the issue and said that he would say anything only after collecting complete facts. He said that it is important to understand the ground reality before reaching any decision.
Intensive inspection for the next two days
According to sources, the Governor will inspect the border areas of Nadia district on Tuesday and visit sensitive posts of Murshidabad on Wednesday. He says that this is not just an inspection visit, but also an effort to strengthen better communication and coordination between agencies. This visit of the Governor is taking place at a time when uneven increase in the number of voters in border areas, major changes in names after SIR and political allegations and counter-allegations are constantly in the headlines.
Increasing importance of tour amid controversies
This successive visit of the Governor is being considered an important sign amid the increasing sensitivity in the political environment. The opposition and various organizations have made various allegations regarding the change in the number of voters in the border districts. At the same time, the administration says that all the changes have been made as per the legal process. Amidst these allegations, public discussions and security concerns, the Governor’s direct inspection may affect the political direction and security assessment of the state in the coming days.
